13 Popular Wood Floor Patterns

So you are thinking about remodeling your home’s flooring? Wood flooring is certainly a great choice, problem is what pattern do you use for your new flooring? Choosing the right wood floor pattern for your home is a decision that will last as long as the floors so it’s important to choose the best wood floor pattern layout from the beginning. With so many different options out there it’s easy to just pick the traditional straight pattern and move on. Going with the easiest and most common could be a mistake and a missed opportunity to add a unique design to your new flooring. Here we will take a peek at some of my favorite layout patterns for your new wood flooring.

Types of Wood or Wood Look Flooring

For the purposes of this blog post when I say wood flooring I am referring to all the different varieties of wood flooring. Some designs discussed will be better suited for one variety of wood flooring than another so it is important to understand the differences between the different varieties of wood flooring.

Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring is an excellent choice when it comes to flooring options Manufactured from solid, natural wood, it’s known for its durability, beauty, and the warm, inviting ambiance it adds to a room. Most hardwood flooring is derived from hardwood trees such as oak, maple, or walnut, providing a huge range of natural color variations, grains, and textures to choose from when remodeling your home. All of the patterns talked about here can be accomplished with hardwood flooring.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate wood flooring is another excellent flooring option. Made from composite wood pressed together at high temperatures, laminate flooring is both extremely tough and versatile, meaning it can be used in any room in your house. the cost of laminate flooring is a huge reason this option is so popular. This flooring option can be less than a third of the cost of hardwood flooring. Like hardwood, laminate flooring can be used in virtually any pattern you desire for your home.

Vinyl Plank Flooring

Vinyl plank flooring is another alternative to hardwood flooring. Vinyl plank can be installed in any room just like laminate flooring and has some other major perks as well. This type of flooring is waterproof, so it is often used in rooms that get wet such as kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. Additionally, vinyl plank flooring tends to cost less than both hardwood and laminate options. With vinyl plank flooring your pattern options are somewhat limited to the simpler designs.

Wood Look Ceramic Tile Flooring

Wood look ceramic tile is resistant to moisture, stains, and wear and tear, making it a durable option for high-traffic areas in your home. Additionally, like vinyl plank and laminate flooring wood look ceramic tile can cost significantly less than the real hardwood flooring while still allowing you a variety of patterns from which to choose. Similar to vinyl planks ceramic tiles are also very limited in installation patterns but the cost and durability can make up for this major drawback.

Engineered Wood Flooring

Engineered wood flooring is a great choice for those looking for the beauty and durability of hardwood. It is made of plywood layers, topped with a solid layer of natural wood veneer. This creates an extremely stable floor that can withstand moisture and temperature changes better than solid hardwood. Additionally, engineered wood flooring allows you to utilize many wood flooring patterns that are not available with some of the other flooring options.

Wood Flooring Patterns

Wood Flooring Inlay with Tile

Wood flooring with tile inlays is one of the most creative and distinctive ways to increase the aesthetic appeal of your home’s flooring. This unique design merges the rustic charm of wooden planks with the luxurious look of ceramic tiles, creating a beautiful contrast in texture, color, and materials. The tile inlays can be made from ceramic, stone, or even mosaic tiles, while the wood sections can be made from hardwood or engineered wood.

One of my favorite parts of a wood floor mixed with tile is its versatility. You can choose to have a simple, subtle design with small tile sections, or go for a more elaborate pattern with large ceramic tiles. This design is sure to add a touch of luxury to any space using this wood floor design.

Painted Wood Flooring

Another option that can create a unique look in your home is by painting your wood flooring. Painting the floor gives you the freedom to choose from virtually any color, pattern, or design imaginable. While this may not be what most people would think of as a pattern, it really is a great way to add a pattern or design to your home. What I love most about painting wood floors is the ability to change out your design every so often. Simply just remove the paint and come up with a new design, this comes in at a fraction of the cost of a complete replacement and will still be fresh and new.

Stained Wood Flooring Pattern

Much like paint, wood stain can be used to create a beautiful flooring pattern. Use it in a similar matter to paint and the options are limitless.

Versailles Wood Flooring Pattern

This design is truly something special. Versailles pattern is also known as a basket weave pattern and can be used with nearly any wood flooring option but would probably look best with hardwood and engineered wood. When considering your pattern options it’s important to consider the cost to install. Since this option is very intricate it can get very expensive very fast. Also, this wood floor pattern layout can truly be used in any room in your home but it typically looks best in larger rooms where you can truly enjoy the flooring pattern.

Intricate Design Wood Flooring

Wood flooring designs can get super intricate as this design proves. To be honest, though this isn’t even the most intricate design I came across. One thing to be careful about before choosing to use a complicated pattern for your flooring is the extra cost. Not only will installation take much longer increasing costs, but there will likely be more material waste which can definitely eat into your budget. This is a great wood floor pattern since it can be customized to meet your unique style.

Dutch Pattern Wood Flooring

The Dutch pattern is a unique wood flooring design that combines large and small planks to create a beautiful, intricate design. Similar to the Versailles pattern, it involves a mix of different sizes of wood planks placed in different directions, creating an eye-catching display. This pattern is perfect for adding character and charm to your home. I absolutely love the 3-1 pattern ratio. I would love to see this design in a small bathroom.

Diagonal Wood Flooring Patterns

A twist on the traditional wood flooring design. Installing the wood planks diagonally is a great way to add extra design to your flooring. Usually, you want to run your pattern parallel to the longest wall in the room but this layout bucks the trend and I am here for it. You have to be careful when using this design and factor in more material waste since there are a lot of diagonal cuts. It may also take a considerable amount of time to install than other wood flooring design options.

Herringbone Wood Flooring Pattern

The herringbone pattern is a classic and timeless design that has been used for centuries in wood flooring designs. It involves laying the planks at an angle to create a V-shaped pattern, giving the feeling of depth and dimension to your flooring. Herringbone floors work well in both small and large rooms, making it one of the more versatile flooring options.

The two most popular styles of herringbone tile flooring are the 45-degree herringbone pattern and the 90-degree herringbone pattern. The 45-degree herringbone is the more traditional pattern and is created by laying the tiles at a 45-degree angle. This creates a diagonal pattern that is more subtle than the 90-degree herringbone design. The 90-degree herringbone is a more modern and bold pattern that is created by laying the tiles at a 90-degree angle. This style creates a stronger diagonal pattern that is more visually appealing.

Chevron Pattern Wood Flooring

The chevron pattern is similar to the herringbone pattern, but instead of creating a V-shape, it creates a continuous zig-zag design. I absolutely love this wood floor pattern with reclaimed wood. This design is perfect for living rooms, kitchens, dining rooms and bedrooms.

Various Width Wood Flooring Pattern

Using different widths of wood planks is another way to add a unique pattern and design to your flooring. With this design, you simply mix various width planks together in an alternating pattern. Nearly all of the patterns and designs discussed here can be created using various width wood planks. Additionally, this option allows for more creativity as you can mix and match different species or stains of wood to achieve your desired look.

Vertical Plank Pattern Wood Flooring

So, this pattern is the traditional pattern we are familiar with. I call it vertical because to achieve this design you place the wood planks in a vertical pattern to the natural walkway of the room. The orientation is an often contested design choice and it comes down to your desired focal point, overall design for the space, lighting, and sightlines. Vertical wood planks can give the impression of a longer and larger room which can be advantageous for some spaces especially smaller living spaces. There really is no right or wrong answer when deciding on plank orientation, it truly just boils down to personal preference.

Horizontal Plank Pattern Wood

As I talked about above. Horizontal planks are laid out in the traditional pattern with the planks running horizontally to the natural walkway of the space. The benefits of running your planks horizontally are that it can give the space a more intimate and cozy feel. This design would be perfect for home offices or home libraries.

Brick Pattern

This isn’t exactly my favorite design idea for wood floor patterns but some people do like it. It involves laying the planks in a brick-like pattern, with each row offset from the one before it. While it may not be as popular as other wood flooring patterns, I can see how this design could add beauty to your already beautiful wood flooring.

Wood Floor Pattern Conclusion

To close up, there are a variety of different wood floor patterns to select from. Each has its own distinct advantages and disadvantages. Each one also brings a completely different design aesthetic to your home. Ultimately it boils down to your personal preference budget and decor style to determine which pattern works best for your home.
