DIY Wood Slat Bench [West Elm Knock Off]
Super fun day today over here, friends!! My friend Aniko rounded up myself and a few other super talented bloggers to create this West Elm Knock Off Decor Series. Throughout the summer, we’ll be sharing our West Elm knock offs with you! How fun is that?
Check out the awesome talent!
This month’s theme is outdoor. We each picked an outdoor item from West Elm and gave our best shot at a knock off.
For my project, I choose the Wood Slat Bench. Since moving into our new house, we’ve been in need of extra seating for our screened in porch and I thought this would be a perfect addition. Plus it can double as a drop zone when we come in from playing outside.
I’m going to spare you the tutorial for this beauty because there was a lot of trial and error here. Lots of wood glue, wood putty, and a little bit of blood sweat, and tears.
It was allllll worth it though for this finished product.
Some details: We used 1x4x6 select pine boards from The Home Depot (about four of them) which made the project about half the sale price of the West Elm piece! I used a dark walnut stain that I’m totally crushing on. I usually go with a lighter color but this dark, rich walnut is gorgeous.
Now that we’ve built the bench, I’m really interested in building the table to go with it. I love it so much.
So there you have it – my first West Elm knock off – the DIY Wood Slat Bench.
Before you run out and try this DIY Wood Slat Bench – be sure to check out what the other gals whipped up! I’m tempted to try every single one!

I love your bench, Chelsea! And I totally understand that ‘trial-and-error’ building method. 🙂 So happy to be a part of this series with you!
It turned out great Chelsea! I love the walnut stain and all the wood grains that are brought out in the piece. I see we both love a good bench. 😉
Love it Chelsea! You chose a really cool stain! I bet this piece of furniture is going to be great addition to your new place! Thanks for being part of this fun series!!
Thank YOU for the inspiration and bringing us together, Aniko!! It’s so fun!
Wow I absolutely love the final result, how awesome (and I too am digging that stain)! It looks better than the original with its rustic feel, great job. Also just scrolling through your blog I see you’re pregnant, I didn’t realize…congratulations! (I just had my first baby only 24 days ago so I know what it’s like to live in the summertime while pregnant, good luck), super excited for you and your family!
aw, thanks Sam!! Pregnant in the Florida heat is a whole other ballgame haha!
The dark stain is really nice! Probably hides porch dirt well, too haha!
I can intuit most of the construction – build top, build box and legs and top to box.
But how did you connect the slats to the long pieces to make the top?
Do you suppose you could sit in the cool and draw up a PDF with dimensions, please?
Hi Marie – we just screwed them in. This was my first build with zero plans myself so I’m not sure that I would properly be able to instruct you how to do it (that’s why I left the tutorial out). There are some great tutorials out there though if you google “wood slat bench” I bet you’ll find a great one with plans. Sorry I can’t be more help!
