Handmade Mother’s Day: Painted Burlap Canvas

I am so excited to share with you, my Painted Burlap Canvas

Handmade Mothers Day Painted Burlap Canvas #handmademothersdayThere are seven days until Mother’s Day! I am honored to be a part of  the Handmade Mother’s Day Series coordinated by my friend, Kelly from Live. Laugh. Rowe. Ten blogs are bringing you fantastic gifts to make for mom!

There are so many wonderful projects. You will want to be sure to head over to the save the date page and catch up on all great projects.

Before we jump in, you have to check out the lovely birth stone necklace Kristen, from Capturing Joy, created.

I wanted to create something for my amazing mom that had a personal touch but would also go with her decor. I decided to do a painted canvas with burlap and to personalize it with special dates. The date she became a mom and the date she became a grandmother (or Mimi as we call her).

To create your own Painted Burlap Canvas you will need: a canvas (I scored my at the thrift shop for a few cents), craft paint, burlap scrap, stencil, paint brush, and thumb tacks.

I started by painting my canvas aqua. My mom loves the color and it goes with her decor. We are both aqua-holics 🙂

Next I cut a piece of burlap approximately 8 in by 10 in (not exact).

Stretch the burlap to keep it taut and pin it in place with thumb tacks.

I created my stencil using my beloved Silhouette Cameo.

I used painter’s tape to keep the stencil in place.

Using minimal amounts of paint, lightly brush on the stencil with paint. I used an off white color. I pulled the stencil off before it dried because I didn’t want my stencil to stick to the burlap.

I absolutely love the way it turned out. It’s personal and pretty and I know my mom is going to love it!

    1. So I kind of took this idea and ran with it–just had to share! I took burlap and nailed it to a canvas and then stenciled “You are my Sunshine” on it with a sun–all inspired by you! Thanks for the idea!

  10. Oh, my gosh! I love this! My mom is also a “mimi” and there seems to never be anything that actually says “mimi” on it. I just got my silhouette in the mail today. Can’t wait to add this to my project file. Thank you.

  15. This may sound lazy but would you share the file that you made for the silhouette? Starting with a blank file intimidates me! I’d like to replicate this for my mom for her birthday!

    1. Hi Holly, I’m sorry I don’t typically save Silhouette files and this post is a few years old so I definitely don’t have it saved. Don’t be nervous! You can totally make this! Stick with a font that isn’t a script. Arial or Helvetica would work just perfect. I think I even used IMPACT. I also always use the gridlines and keep in mine the size of my canvas when stretching the graphic to make sure it’s on scale. I hope these tips help you!
