An interesting ceiling design can make the most of the limited square footage in a bathroom, drawing the eye upward and creating a sense of depth and dimension. It adds an unexpected element of style and sophistication to the space, elevating the overall aesthetic and making it feel more luxurious.

Whether you prefer a timeless and elegant aesthetic a bold and eclectic vibe or you love a minimalist look, there are countless options to explore when it comes to bathroom ceiling ideas. From classic coffered ceilings to modern geometric patterns, from rustic exposed beams to sleek and seamless designs, the possibilities are truly endless. Here you will find some of my favorite bathroom ceiling ideas and hopefully, a few inspire you as you design your very own.

Wood Planks on a Bathroom Ceiling

One way to bring in neutral tones to a bathroom is by installing wood planks on the ceiling. This creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere, perfect for unwinding in a relaxing bath or getting ready for the day ahead. For an application like this, I prefer traditional keeping the natural wood tones in woods like oak, pine and cedar. However, if you prefer you could paint the wood planks any color you choose.

Vaulted Ceiling

If you are fortunate to have a high ceiling in your bathroom, consider installing a vaulted ceiling. Not only does it create the illusion of more space, but it also adds a stunning architectural feature that sets your bathroom apart from all others. You could also add recessed lighting for a modern look or incorporate chandeliers for a touch of elegance.

Bathroom Ceiling with Shiplap

Shiplap is a super popular choice for adding texture and interest to your home’s walls, but it can also be used on the ceiling to create a truly unique and eye-catching design element. The horizontal lines of the shiplap ceiling can visually widen a narrow bathroom, making it feel larger than it actually is.

Mirrors

This idea is not necessarily, my favorite but it certainly is a unique and interesting idea. Installing a mirrored ceiling in your bathroom not only creates a cool and modern look, but it also adds the illusion of extra height to the space. So this is a particularly great idea if you have a small bathroom and are looking to design the ceiling.

Add a Mural

Looking for a truly one of a kind bathroom ceiling, think about adding a mural or other hand-painted design. This could be anything from a whimsical nature scene to an abstract geometric pattern. Not only does this add an artistic touch to the space, but it also allows you to incorporate your personal style and taste into the design. This bathroom features a coastal theme and the painted night scene is a perfect addition to this small bathroom.

Ceiling Beams

Are you looking to add some rustic charm to your bathroom? Consider adding ceiling beams to your bathroom. Whether they are real or faux beams, exposed wooden beams are a definite showstopper in a small bathroom. They also create a beautiful contrast when paired with modern finishes, creating a stunning look. I have always loved the look of weathered gray ceiling beams which would look great with either Benjamin Moore Paper White or Benjamin Moore Balboa White. This is one of my favorite bathroom ceiling ideas, I cant wait to have my forever home to give this a try.

Painted Bathroom Ceiling

I absolutely adore this gray painted ceiling. I love how it coordinates beautifully with the gray in the wall tiles. The gray ceiling also looks great with the dark wood floors. This idea is perfect because the possibilities are endless you can literally choose any color you like. I recommend choosing a color that coordinates with the existing decor of the bathroom. Some colors that I love for painted bathroom ceilings include; Sherwin Williams Eider White, this color is the perfect shade white to accent any color you choose for the walls of your bathroom, Sherwin Williams Repose Gray, this color is a great way to add a touch of color in an unexpected location such as the ceiling.

Chandelier Lighting

Consider adding unique light fixtures to your ceiling. Often times homes have builder grade light fixtures and a quick and easy upgrade is to replace them with something that fits your personal style. I have always loved the look of a small beautiful chandalier in the bathroom. It just adds so much elegance and beauty to a space it can’t be beaten. PLace the new fixture near the bathroom vanity for maximum impact on the space

Tiled Ceiling

This idea is really only practical in the shower ceiling but it’s still a neat idea. I love subway tile so adding subway tile to a bathroom’s ceiling is something I would definitely consider. Subway tile is super versatile and there is a pattern and size that is sure to appeal to you. I have always been partial to a herringbone pattern or chevron pattern but those might just be a bit too busy for a ceiling accent and distract from the rest of the bathroom’s decor. So I would recommend sticking with the traditional offset/ staggered brick pattern if you are considering tiling your shower ceiling.

Tin Bathroom Ceiling

This idea is perfect for someone looking to add a vintage touch to their bathroom. Tin ceilings were very common in homes built between the 1880s and 1920s and are still used today in some interior design projects. If you choose to go this route scout out vintage and antique hardware shops as they might have some really nice vintage ones that would look amazing on a farmhouse or any bathroom ceiling.

Wallpaper Bathroom Ceiling

What is there to say about wallpaper. I have written a few other posts on wallpaper recently. What I like best about it is the variety available. The patterns are nearly endless. I recently did a project where I took traditional wallpaper and made it removable wallpaper. This makes for a great DIY since traditional wallpaper can be awfully difficult to remove when you change your design style or if you are a renter when you leave the rental home.

Install a Skylight

This idea is definitely a little pricier than some of the other ideas but it is an absolutely brilliant idea. If you have a bathroom that sits in the center of your home with no access to natural light, consider adding a skylight. Not only does a skylight look great but it will bring in tons of natural light which is always a good thing.

Match the Walls

This idea is probably the most subtle of all and certainly not terribly unique. Some bathrooms have a lot going on (in terms of decor) while others are pretty plain and simple, if your bathroom falls into the latter category consider painting the ceiling to match the walls. This will create a cohesive and seamless look throughout the space, without being overly distracting from the rest of the bathroom decor.

Add Trim

This is a really unique idea. Adding trim to your bathroom ceiling is an excellent way to give your room a standout feature. This designer used a dark wood trim to highlight the architectural feature in the center of the room. The trim probably was not necessary since the feature would likely standout on its own but the trim really adds that WOW factor everyone wants.

Bathroom Ceiling Ideas Conclusion

After seeing some of my favorite bathroom ceiling ideas I hope you found some inspiration for your home remodel.  Don’t neglect that fifth wall in your space, instead use one of these ideas to create a stunning and functional bathroom design. Whether you choose to paint, add beams, or go for a more unique option like tin or wallpaper, remember that the ceiling is an important part of creating a cohesive and beautiful bathroom.
